"Mary's Peril"

by D. Chapelle

An Excerpt:

Ida. I don't know why I even bother. What with Sweet Mary disappeared, and the rest of the family either dead or disappeared, there ain't nobody around to care if I dust or not. Yep, things just won't be the same without sweet Sweet Mary around.(A knock on the door.) I suppose I'd better answer that, but I can't think who it might be visiting an empty old mansion.

(She exits to answer the door. There is a sudden gasp by Mrs. Dustmoor and she returns to the room with a very dazed SWEET MARY.)

Mary. You seem to know me, kind woman.

Ida. Know you! 'Course I know you, Sweet Mary!

Mary. How can you know who I am if I don't even know who I am? I certainly don't know you. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you must admit it is more that a bit strange.

Ida. Why, you're Sweet Mary Rogers. Everybody 'round has just been worried sick since you came up missing this morning.

Mary. I've been missing? But that's impossible. I'm right here. Now how can I be missing if I'm standing here?

Ida. But before that you was missing.

Mary. I was? Where have I been?

Ida. You don't know?

Mary. No. I don't know. If I did know, I wouldn't be asking, kind lady.

Ida. Well, what was the last thing you remember?

Mary. You asking me what was the last thing I remember.

Ida. Before that.

Mary. Before that you asked me where I've been.

Ida.(Aside.) This might take a little more doing than I thought. (To Mary.) Now have a seat, Mary, and think hard. I know it ain't easy for you, but you got to try. Now before you came here, you was someplace else. Can you tell me where that was?

Mary. Before I came here I was someplace else?

Ida. And that place was?

Mary. I know! Oh, oh, I know this one! I've got it! Before I came here I was someplace else!

Ida.(Aside.) Trying to get information from this girl is like trying to get water out of a rock.

Mary. That's all I can remember.

Ida. That's all? That's all you can remember?

Mary. I'm afraid so. Unless you're talking about the horrible accident I had while driving in my horseless horse and buggy.

Ida. You had a horrible accident in your horseless horse and buggy?

Mary. I know that, silly. If you knew I had a horrible accident in my horseless horse and buggy, why did you ask?

Ida. But I didn't know 'till you just told me.

Mary.Told you what?

Ida. That you told me about the horrible accident.

Mary. What horrible accident?

Ida. The one you had in your horseless horse and buggy.

Mary. I did?

Ida. Don't you remember?

Mary.(Thinking very hard.)Yes. Yes I do believe I do. I remember driving along just as happy as the little birdies singing in the trees, and then suddenly everything went Bloooie!

Ida. Bloooie!

Mary. Blooooie! Suddenly I couldn't control where I was going and I couldn't stop myself. It was worse than going into a candy store while you're on a diet.

Ida. And you don't remember anything else?

Mary. Sorry.
